Here is the List of Essential Tools to get you started:

1. Quran:

 2. Spiral Note Book:

The Second essential tool you need for Effective Quran Journaling is a Spiral Note Book. Now you might wonder- Why Choose a Spiral Notebook for Quran Tafseer Notes?

Spiral Notebooks are perfect for daily Quran Journaling as they allow you to fold the pages back without damaging them, make it easier to write comfortably. Unlike traditional bound notebooks, where the pages stay flat.

I have included the picture of Spiral Notebook to give you idea of what works best.

3. An App or A Video of Tafseer:

For Understanding Quran Tafsir better you need some Tafsir resources. You can use mobile app and websites that have tafsir like Tafsir Ibn Kathir and Tafsir Al Tabari. These are the most famous and trusted Explanation of the Quran.

You can also find video Tafsir lectures from YouTube. Well-known Scholars like Dr Farhat Hashmi and Dr Israr Ahmed have full tafsir series available online. I personally listen to “Talim-ul-Quran by Dr Farhat Hashmi”, it's easy to understand tafsir and is perfect for beginners.

4. A Note-Taking Template

Having a consistent structure for your notes saves time and ensures you cover all important aspects. You can create a template with the following headings for each set of verses:

  • Surah & Verse Number:
  • Key Arabic Words & Meanings:
  • Context (Asbab al-Nuzul - Reason for Revelation):
  • Summary of Tafseer (in my own words):
  • Personal Reflection & Lessons:
  • Action Points:
  • Questions for Further Research

5. A "To-Research" Log

During your study, questions will inevitably pop up that would take you too long to answer right then. Instead of getting derailed, write them down in a dedicated section at the back of your notebook or in a separate digital document. You can then research them later when you have more time.

6. Gel Pens:

You can use an type of pen that you feel comfortable writing with. I personally recommend using gel pens. They write very smoothly and make your journaling experience more enjoyable. I like to use Black, Red, Blue and Green gel pens to highlight different points in my Tafsir notes.

7. Sticky Notes:

Sticky Notes are a great addition to your Quran Tafseer Notes. You can use them to write down important points and related hadiths that you want to highlight separately.

They not only help in organizing extra information but also give your notes a creative and aesthetic look.

And that's a Wrap!!

The goal of gathering these tools is not to have a perfect collection, but to facilitate a perfect connection. The most expensive journal and the most complete library of books are useless without an open heart and a sincere intention.

Don't let the search for the "perfect" tools become a barrier to starting. Begin with what you have. The first step—opening the Quran with the intention to understand—is the most important one.

May Allah bless your journey, fill your heart with the light of His words, and make your Tafseer notes a source of guidance, comfort, and growth for you in this life and the next. Ameen.
